Cold Steel Cheap shots??

Postby MrBallistic » Tue Jun 06, 2017 7:01 am

Morning gents

I'm wondering if anyone has tested these new polymer broadheads?
I know Cold Steels reputation for blades as being some of the best in the world and tough too so I would like to know how these BH's tune, shoot etc.
They come in very very affordable at R245 for 10. Watched some of the YouTube footage and they seem quite capable for "plastic".

Vic I think you guys are busy or are going to be testing them?

Hi Allistair

This is very interesting. Have you seen it in a shop? I would really like to take it on a field test!!! Looks like a viable solution to expensive broadheads

Sharp Edge sells them!
As Vic said it may only be a one shot option but at like R24 a shot if that's the case it may not be that bad if you consider hitting something hard on the other side.
Pig carcass showed complete pass throughs, thin steel plates offered little resistance.
Be anxious to see how they tune??? Vic??

I for one won't use a broadhead like that on an animal. I can't see how a plastic broadhead can be as strong as a normal metal one.

I want to have confidence in my entire setup when I take aim at an animal. That is after all why we spend thousands and thousands of Rands on having the best bow, sight, rest, stabilizer and arrows. But when it comes to the actual part of the equipment that really does the killing part, we want to use a cheap broadhead. Isn't that the part where we really need to invest?

I always want to be ready for the worst case scenario. That is why I shoot a heavy draw, with heavy arrows and fixed blade broadheads. I know that my setup won't fail me even if something happens that I didn't anticipate. I know we all try to take the perfect shot each time, but we all know that isn't what happens in the field. What will that broadhead do if a big bone like a humerus is hit? Will the leg bone or the broadhead break first? I personally don't want to find out in an animal. I know my setup breaks the opposite shoulder and still passes through a red hartebeast, so it should be able to break the near shoulder and still make it to the vitals if something should happen that is out of my control.

By buying good quality broadheads one can actually hunt with a head that cost you less than R20 per animal. My current broadhead stands on 8 animals and is still going strong and after sharpening the same blades every time it cost me R17.92 per animal. To be honest I did buy those heads 3 years ago.

Joe

Your points about using the most reliable, best products are valid but I think to knock a product before or anyone has tested it is little unfair.
As mentioned Cold Steel are one of the best blade manufacturers in the world so I can hardly see them putting on the market that a) doesn't work and b) hasn't been tested. You can NEVER count for all variables and too surmise that you will be able to break any bone to get the vitals may in the end prove to be a mistake.
As you said the aim of hunting is to shoot the best shot possible so why wouldn't these BH's work. I think the thought process doesn't work in the products favour when it is referred to as a plastic, polymers are engineered and some of them are tougher and stronger than steel. A good example is carbon is used instead of steel for the suspension of a F1 car, plain superiority not only weight wise. The same failure can be said for steel BH's, some fail hopelessly in ballistic gel.
Cold Steel have video's on youtube, have a look before judging. I know there are ceramic blades that will outlast and outcut Damascus steel, they may be brittle but for the intense and purposes they cut better. Materials like these are the way of the future.

Again it comes down to personal preference and what one prefers to use. I use mechanicals (Rage), I don't knock fixed blades as they work but for what I have tested and found best for me these are what I like. I am anxious to see what these BH's can really do, not as a replacement for the Rage but as a viable option to it.
Vic looking forward to seeing the results in the BH mag.

Only the ColdSteel video gave positive feedback on this product. In that video, if I have my facts right, a stinger BH did not go through plywood, but this CS BH did...

I hear what you are saying about polimers being stronger than steel, but Vic also said it is a single use broadhead. What makes it a single use head? Is it blunt or does it break?

I still won't trust a head like that on an animal, I personally don't want to experiment on animals with a head that even Coldsteel claims it to be a one shot head. I would still like to see how it performs, but then it would be a great head for SABA. But luckily each of us are free to make up our own minds and have our own opinions.

Keen to read the test. But just because it's cold steel, does not guarantee a great product. I had two cold steel blades that didn't hold there edge well, and my budget CRKT worked better, that could be the exception but just saying.
