Black Wildebeest with my current Setup

Postby SBC101 » Mon Oct 02, 2017 8:24 pm

Hi Guys

I would like to hunt a Black Wildebeest next and I would appreciate some feedback as to the effectiveness of my current setup. Basically, my question is: With good shot placement (Yes I understand that this is priority number one.), will this setup be sufficient for an ethical kill?

The setup is as follows:

Bow: Bowtech Assassin
Draw Length: 28"
Draw Weight: 68lb
Arrow: Easton Aftermath 300
Broadhead: Slick Trick Standard 125gr

The arrows total weight (Arrow, broadhead, 4" fletches) is 428grain according to my OMP digital archery scale.

I have never shot arrows from my bow through a chronograph or done any tests like that, but at 25 yards, the arrow went through a Springbok like it was not even there.

Any input shall be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Your setup should be fine, I estimate momentum on 0.53 slugs v SABA guidelines that equates to 0.44 slugs momentum. Combined with a slick trick in front you should be good to go. As you have stated shot placement is first and foremost.
Reign 6 70# 618gn 263fps 95ke 0.72 slugs
RPM 360 70# 618gn 272fps 102ke 0.75 slugs
PSE OMEN MAX 80# 950gn 233fps 114ke 0.99 slugs
GT Kinetic XT Big Game 200 spine 618gn FOC 15%
Carbon Core Nightmares 150 spine 950gn FOC 20%

I concur. Setup is fine for Black Wildebeest. My guesstimate also came to 0.53 Slug momentum and KE around 74ft-pd...... Happy hunting!!

The Bowtech Assassin is a very effective bow and with your DL and poundage your equipment should be more than adequate.

Why is that? From reading I see they prefer wide open spaces?

Not sure. I have spoken to about three farms in the past few year that have removed the Black WB by culling them with rifle, because they have had limited to no success shooting from the hide.

Again, if you look on YouTube there there are many successful hunts on black WB..

The farms I refer to, I specifically asked to hunt a Black WB, they were open enough to tel me that they cannot be sure that I will even see one at the hide.

Yes your setup is more than enough

Yes I agree, have never seen one at a hide, but I have been in a hunting group at Aasvoelrand when they still had Black WB. The only guy in the group that haven't bowhunted before had Black WB at the hide and shot a cow.

Sometimes luck is on your side!!

Also something that I would like to shoot one of these days, W&S a few but never got closer than 70m because the stayed in the open.

Hope you get your Black WB!!
